How GPS changed airdrops
U.S. Air Force loadmasters from the 39th Airlift Squadron prepare to drop an Improvised Container Delivery System bundle, July 29, 2015, at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. An ICDS derives from a traditional Container Delivery System but uses a sonde, an instrument that acts as a Global Positioning System receiver. The sonde is released from the aircraft on the first pass over a drop zone to better calculate the winds throughout the air column. With this information, the aircrew is able to compute a more precise drop point to achieve the most accurate delivery to the drop zone (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Autumn Velez/Released).
