Dyess Honorary Commander's Program

About The Program

  • Purpose: Build partnerships with Abilene civic leaders and share knowledge on the Air Force and Dyess Air Force Base.
  • Community Connection: Maintain and enhance positive relationships between Dyess and the local community.
  • Advisory Forum: A platform for Dyess commanders to seek advice and support from civic leaders on military and community matters.

Member responsibilities

  • Assignments: Honorary commanders are paired with unit commanders from:
    • 7th Bomb Wing
    • 317th Airlift Wing
    • 21st Air Task Force
    • 489th Bomb Group
    • 436th Training Squadron
    • 337th Test Evaluation Squadron
    • 77th Weapons Squadron
  • Event Participation:
    • Attend on-base and unit functions, awards ceremonies, changes of command, and holiday events (often held during standard work hours.)
    • Immerse in the assigned unit’s mission and share your experiences and expertise with Airmen.
  • Role Importance: This is a single, three-year term. Members will serve as a committed liaison between Dyess and the community, ensuring diverse perspectives while maintaining continuity.

How to join

  • Nominations: Nominate yourself or another community leader!
  • Application: The application window will be open November 1st and close November 30th. Applications will be received once the window opens November 1st and can be sent to 7bw.pa.publicaffairs@us.af.mil.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Must Be:
    • A U.S. citizen of outstanding character, integrity, and patriotism.
    • A leader in local, regional, or national community affairs.
    • Able to provide insights to senior Air Force and Space Force leaders.
    • Capable of disseminating information about the Air Force and Space Force.
    • Willing to devote regular time as a civic leader.
  • Cannot Be:
    • A federal government employee.
    • A federally elected or appointed official (local officials considered on a case-by-case basis).
    • An active member of the National Guard or Ready Reserve.
    • A retired military member
    • A paid employee of any political party or candidate.
    • Holding financial interests that conflict with civic leadership roles or involved with DoD contracts.
