Dyess Airman awarded medal for heroism
DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Senior Airman Dustin Gillespie, 317th Maintenance Squadron, receives the Air Force Achievement Medal from Col. Bernard Mater, 317th Airlift Group commander, for heroism before departing Dyess for a deployment on Oct. 12. Five days earlier, Airman Gillespie performed self-aid and buddy care on Bradin Lowe, a toddler who was thrown from a vehicle after an accident despite being in a car seat. He treated the toddler for shock and a head wound. After treating the toddler, Airman Gillespie also controlled the crowd to allow for ambulance access, and kept the child and his mother calm. According to Colonel Mater, the timely actions of Airman Gillespie contributed to the well-being of the toddler and prevented his medical condition from becoming life-threatening.
