The Commander's Corner is a forum for the Dyess community to make suggestions or voice concerns about Dyess directly to Brig. Gen. Glen VanHerck, 7th Bomb Wing commander. Each week the Dyess Public Affairs office solicits questions via the official Dyess Facebook page, offering people an opportunity to ask questions and receive answers directly from the wing commander.

QUESTION
McCall Elgin - I would just like to give a huge Thanx to CE for being out
late fixing my water line that burst. And coming out in the middle of the
night/early morning to get it turned back on the night before Thanksgiving!
They were awesome and willing to keep me informed as well. It was greatly
appreciated!

  RESPONSE

McCall - Thanks for taking some time to post your appreciation on
Facebook! I know our CE folks work hard in some not-so-perfect conditions,
especially during the holidays. Have a happy and safe holiday.

QUESTION
Alisson Moraes - Just like most of the dorm residents I have a concern
about the updates on the re-opening or permanent closure of the DFAC.
Thanks!

Alisson - Thanks for your question. Let me assure you the Dining
Facility renovations are right on track. Currently, we are looking forward
to the grand re-opening in April 2014, though in our current fiscal
environment please understand that this may change. In the meantime, I am
sure you are aware that our Flight Kitchen is open 24/7 to all Airmen. I
appreciate your continued patience as we work to accomplish these
renovations and I look forward to having a fantastic new DFAC in the future.
Happy holidays, Alisson!

QUESTION
Ashley Thomas - Recycling is very important to me, so it concerns me when
I am told that our base doesn't recycle. I researched that we're required to
have a recycling plan, but when a truck comes by it picks up both trash and
recycling in the same load. Can you shed some light on this?

  RESPONSE

Ashley - I can certainly shed some light on recycling here at Dyess. Up
until 2012, Air Combat Command provided Dyess AFB $100K per year to fund
paper and cardboard recycling. However, on a good year, the recycling only
generated proceeds of $25K, but most years it was closer to $12K. Due to
fiscal challenges, funding for the recycling center was cut. Unfortunately,
I do not have funds available to divert to the recycling center. There is
still limited paper and cardboard recycling available on base, but it is
funded through Military Housing funds, so weekly pickup is limited to base
housing (in fact, it is mandatory for those residents). All others
interested in recycling their paper and cardboard waste can still take items
to the Recycling Center, located at 805 Rapcon Road (just inside the Tye
Gate entrance). Their hours of operation are: Monday thru Friday,
0730-1630 and Saturdays 0800-1200. We've also contacted the City of Abilene
to see if they could operate a recycling station on Dyess similar to what
you see at Wal-Mart or HEB. They explained that even with a surcharge on
every city resident's monthly bill, recycling operations were in the red
most months. Unfortunately, in the current budget picture, full recycling
service is just not a viable option at this time. Be sure to check the
Dyess AFB website and Facebook for future updates.
