RESPONSE
Jennifer - That's a great question, and I am pleased to see that you -
like many of our Airmen who could potentially be impacted by the FY14 Force
Management Program initiatives - have taken an active role in the process by
asking questions and learning what options may be available to you. Inanswer
to your question - if a member is set to meet a retention board, they will
not have the option of returning to a previous AFSC prior to the board
- there is no standard option to retrain in-lieu of meeting the board.
However, if the member is retained by the board, he or she could apply to
retrain and return to their previous AFSC through the normal process, but
varying factors would still have to line up - the member's current AFSC
would still have to be considered over manned and their previous AFSC would
still have to be considered undermanned. Obviously, the opportunities
available to the Airmen who are ultimately selected for a force-management
separation will vary from person to person, but I want to highlight one
opportunity that some may have - which is to continue their service in
either the AF Reserve or the National Guard. I encourage you to research
this and the other options that are available to you personally. And if you
have further questions - my leadership and I are standing by to assist.
Thanks for your interest, Jennifer.
