Celebrating 30 years: Retired colonel remembers arrival of first B-1B

Abilene Magazine compiled a series of articles about Dyess Air Force Base and the B-1B Lancer leading up to its arrival June 29, 1985. The articles expounded on the B-1 and its capabilities, the efforts to get it to Dyess and the anticipated impact upon the city of Abilene. In an excerpt from the issue, it stated, “To say Abilene and area citizens welcomed the B-1 with open arms is an understatement. Abilene has welcomed the military so well that the base and community relationship is a modern-day legend.” (Courtesy photo)
