Dyess receives first operational IBS-upgraded B-1

The first newly upgraded operational B1-B Lancer prepares to take flight Jan. 21, 2014, at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. The B-1B Lancer was recently upgraded with a new Integrated Battle Station. Abilene Magazine’s article written about the B-1B Lancer was one of a series published in its June 1985 collector’s issue. The city of Abilene and the rest of West Central Texas provided overwhelming support for the most modern aircraft in the Air Force’s inventory at the time. Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Morton Langholtz, the B-1 Site Activation Task Force commander from 1983-1985, described how the interest in the B-1 was phenomenal, which continued to strengthen the relationship between the Abilene and Dyess community. Abilene Magazine compiled a series of articles about Dyess Air Force Base and the B-1B Lancer leading up to its arrival June 29, 1985. The articles expounded on the B-1 and its capabilities, the efforts to get it to Dyess and the anticipated impact upon the city of Abilene. In an excerpt from the issue, it stated, “To say Abilene and area citizens welcomed the B-1 with open arms is an understatement.
