Airman 1t Class Charles Edwards pulls out a hose to inject fuel into a B-1B Lancer March 19 at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. The bomber was the Air Force's first aircraft to fly at the supersonic speeds using a 50/50 blend of synthetic and petroleum fuel. The supersonic flight occured over the White Sands Missile Range airspace in south-central New Mexico, but took off from Dyess AFB. Airman Edwards is a crew chief with the 7th Aerial Maintenance Squadron.


B-1B achieves first supersonic flight using synthetic fuel

Airman 1t Class Charles Edwards pulls out a hose to inject fuel into a B-1B Lancer March 19 at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. The bomber was the Air Force's first aircraft to fly at the supersonic speeds using a 50/50 blend of synthetic and petroleum fuel. The supersonic flight occured over the White Sands Missile Range airspace in south-central New Mexico, but took off from Dyess AFB. Airman Edwards is a crew chief with the 7th Aerial Maintenance Squadron.

A B-1 Bomber from the 9th Bomb Squadron takes-off Oct. 17, 2012, during an Operational Readiness Exercise at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. For three days Team Dyess was tested on their ability to deploy personnel and assets to a deployed location in support of combatant commanders during an ORE Oct. 15-17. During this exercise, known as a Phase I ORE, Dyess was evaluated on the wing’s ability to prepare and mobilize from peacetime readiness to a wartime posture on short notice. Areas evaluated included command and control, deployment processing, employment readiness, information operations and force protection. The C-130J incorporates state-of-the-art technology to reduce manpower requirements, lower operating and support costs, and provides life-cycle cost savings over earlier C-130 models. Compared to older C-130s, the J-model climbs faster and higher, flies farther at a higher cruise speed, and takes off and lands in a shorter distance.
