Dyess personnel line the flightline to salute as the first of sixteen C-130Js that took off for a training exercise July, 2, 2012, at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. The simulated mission was an airdrop above two different drop zones. Once the final aircraft was airborne, the 317th Airlift Group made history, flying the largest C-130J formation ever. A B-1 Bomber from the 9th Bomb Squadron takes-off Oct. 17, 2012, during an Operational Readiness Exercise at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. For three days Team Dyess was tested on their ability to deploy personnel and assets to a deployed location in support of combatant commanders during an ORE Oct. 15-17. During this exercise, known as a Phase I ORE, Dyess was evaluated on the wing’s ability to prepare and mobilize from peacetime readiness to a wartime posture on short notice. Areas evaluated included command and control, deployment processing, employment readiness, information operations and force protection. C-130J Super Hercules from the 317th Airlift Group sit on the flightline during a storm Sept. 18, 2012, at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. Dyess recently received its 23rd of 28 C-130Js. The C-130J incorporates state-of-the-art technology to reduce manpower requirements, lower operating and support costs, and provides life-cycle cost savings over earlier C-130 models. Compared to older C-130s, the J-model climbs faster and higher, flies farther at a higher cruise speed, and takes off and lands in a shorter distance. C-130J Super Hercules from the 317th Airlift Group weather a storm Sept. 18, 2012, at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. Dyess recently received its 23rd of 28 C-130Js. The C-130J is the newest generation of the C-130 Hercules which primarily performs the tactical portion of the airlift mission. The aircraft is capable of operating from rough, dirt strips and is the prime transport for air dropping troops and equipment into hostile areas. A cargo bundle rigged with a Joint Precision Airdrop System (JPADS) is positioned on a C-130J Super Hercules assigned to the 317th Airlift Group prior to an airdrop training mission Aug. 14, 2012, at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. JPADS is a cargo parachute system that incorporates an onboard global positioning system able to guide the cargo with pinpoint accuracy to a designated drop zone.
