Air Force's 66th Birthday Celebrated with AF Ball

DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --  The Dyess Air Force Ball was held Sept. 20, at the Abilene Civic Center, in commemoration of the Air Force's 66th birthday.

Retired Chief Master Sgt. Of the Air Force Robert Gaylor spoke as the guest speaker for the night. Gaylor joined the Air Force one year after its inception 1948, and served on active duty for three decades.

Gaylor spoke on how the Air Force's view on taking care of the Airmen and their families has changed since his enlistment more than 65 years ago.

"When I was stationed in Korea, not once did someone check on my wife and children," Gaylor said. "Nobody called or asked if she needed anything. Now we have key spouse programs and support groups, it's wonderful."

There was also a small skit in which Dyess Airman, who volunteered to wear historical uniforms from different time periods in Air Force history, walked across the main floor showing the vintage military wear.

"Seeing all these uniforms are a history lesson for a lot of you but for me it's a bit nostalgic," Gaylor said. "To me these uniforms and names mean a bit more. I've worn some of these uniforms at one time or another and I've had the honor of meeting some of the people portrayed in them."

Staff Sgt. Jonathan Rodgers, 7th Comptroller Squadron and Airman 1st Class Eric Tkacs, 7th Logistic Readiness Squadron who also participated in the historical uniform skit, cut the ceremonial cake.

"Being part of such a fun tradition is great enough as it is, but I was also fortunate enough to portray one of the Air Force's most historic heroes while doing it," Rodgers said. "This made the night an unforgettable experience, and I am more than grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it!"
