The Defense Commissary Agency has launched an RSS feed for commissary customers, media and other users of its Web site http://www.commissaries.com.

RSS, or real simple syndication, is a service computer users subscribe to that automatically updates with the latest content from specifically selected Web sites. Unlike e-mail, however, users do not receive unsolicited information through RSS. Users set their software to retrieve only the feeds they want and can later decide to remove a feed from their lists.

Technology is making it easy to publish regular updates to Web-based content, but users are finding it hard to keep track of new information when it is posted on their favorite Web sites. With RSS, users can streamline their online experience by subscribing to specific content 'feeds,' which are then gathered in one place to be read when the user chooses. In short, subscribing to RSS feeds makes it possible to review a large amount of online content in a very short time.

"We are excited to offer the latest DeCA news for quick and easy delivery to our customer," said DeCA Director and Chief Executive Officer Patrick Nixon. "Our Web site upgrades are part of DeCA's continuing efforts to get the most up-to-date news and information about the commissary benefit to the best customers in the world -- the men and women serving in the U.S. armed forces."

DeCA's Web site is updated continuously with news and information, such as product recalls and upcoming events and promotions. In addition, the site includes standing sections such as "Kay's Kitchen" and "Ask the DeCA Dietitian." Select information from these sections will be made available in an RSS feed at a later date.

To sign up for DeCA's feed, or for additional information on RSS technology and how it can work for you, go to the DeCA Web site and click on the RSS icon in the upper right hand corner of the site.

The Defense Commissary Agency operates a worldwide chain of commissaries providing groceries to military personnel, retirees and their families in a safe and secure shopping environment. Authorized patrons purchase items at cost plus a 5-percent surcharge, which covers the costs of building new commissaries and modernizing existing ones. Shoppers save an average of more than 30 percent on their purchases compared to commercial prices - savings worth about $3,000 annually for a family of four.

A core military family support element, and a valued part of military pay and benefits, commissaries contribute to family readiness, enhance the quality of life for America's military and their families, and help recruit and retain the best and brightest men and women to serve their country.
