The Deadwood Café opened Sept. 14 at Dyess Lanes, and the fare is different from anything that's been offered on base before.

After three months of renovations that cost three-quarters of a million dollars, the café now features a renovated snack bar with all new equipment; new carpet, flooring and paint; an added meeting/party room; and a control counter that's more central to the hubbub.

"We want to present the Dyess community with an environment no other facility can mirror," said Alice Fournier, 7th Services Squadron business flight chief. "Because recreation costs are low for Airmen, a lot of base morale, welfare and recreation offices aren't able to generate the kind of income necessary to do heavy renovations. Headquarters Air Combat Command ponied up to help, and what we're planning to do to the bowling center will be absolutely phenomenal."

The 7th Services Squadron even hired a bowling designer to ensure all of the renovations will be 100 percent serviceable and effective to the needs of the community, Mrs. Fournier said.

"This is a new venue for people to relax," said Wayne Roach, the bowling center manager. "We'll still have our famous Texas pin burger, but we've changed the menu, added subs, put eight beers on tap, and even have a few surprise changes that will be appearing soon." The cost will be comparable with downtown agencies to keep recreation affordable for Airmen.

The new area - suitable for all ages - is a no-pressure place for Airmen and their families to come buy food, talk and bowl, Mr. Roach said. The meeting room can even be used for children's birthday parties.

"We've got a great lounge area with a 52-inch flat screen TV," Mr. Roach said. "So even if you're just coming in to relax, it's a place to socialize and have a good time. It's important for Airmen to be able to unwind after work without breaking the bank."

The Deadwood Café hours of operation are Sundays, 12 to 6 p.m.; Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to midnight. For more information, or to reserve a room in the café, call 696-4166.
