A Dyess medical officer was recently recognized as a Champion for Children for his work in the community as a child advocate.

Captain Randy Naidoo, 7th Medical Group pediatrician, was selected by Champions for Children as the Medical Champion of the Year.

The award came as a surprise to the doctor, whom sees his role as a doctor to always be an advocate for children.

"As a pediatrician, I believe my job goes beyond just taking care of a runny nose or an ear infection. I'm always looking for a way I can help whether they're children on base or off base," Captain Naidoo said.

The doctor was recognized at the 8th Champions for Children conference held at the Abilene Civic Center. The conference recognized a person from a few different categories across Abilene for work done advocating children.

During his two years at Dyess, Captain Naidoo said it was important to him to volunteer his time in the community.

"I never thought I would be a monthly TV show when I got here," the doctor said. "However, its been a great opportunity for me to advocate for children, help with domestic issues, parental advice and helping single parents out."

Besides his television show he volunteers on Mondays to give time to a children's church. During that time he said he is able to work with children that have some amazing talents and help them explore their talents further.

His recognition though he said couldn't come without the support of a great team at Dyess.

"I wouldn't be able to have this opportunity to take the time to help the community if it wasn't for the great staff we have at the (7th MDG). They have been phenomenal to allow me to be free up time to do these things," Captain Naidoo said. "I also owe a lot of thanks to my family as well for giving me the support I need."
