Eight steps to make fruits, vegetables safe to eat Published June 11, 2008 7th Medical Group DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- While most fruits and vegetables are relatively safe to eat right away from the local grocery store, it is important to properly buy and clean those items to keep them safe for yourself and family. Below are eight helpful tips to keep your produce safe and enjoyable: 1. Avoid purchasing fruits and vegetables that are damaged, bruised or slimy. 2. Purchase a two or three day supply of fruits and vegetables to avoid bruising and spoilage. 3. Wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds before and after handling fruits and vegetables. 4. Before and after food preparation make sure to clean all surfaces and utensils with hot water and soap. 5. Rinse your fruits and vegetables under running tap water including those with skins and rinds that are not eaten. 6. Use a vegetable brush when rinsing firm skin fruits and vegetables under tap water. 7. Make sure to dry fruits and vegetables with a clean cloth towel or paper towel after cleaning. 8. Avoid using detergent or bleach when washing your fresh fruits and vegetables. For more information contact the Dyess Public Health office at 696-3544 or 696-5478 or visit www.cdc.gov.
