Main gate out-bound traffic to be rerouted Published June 11, 2008 By Staff Sgt. Joel Mease 7th Bomb Wing Public Affairs DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Dyess personnel may experience a slight delay when leaving from the main gate starting June 23 until July 3, as construction on the two outbound lanes will reroute all out-bound traffic. The construction of the out-bound lanes at the main gate may cause traffic to slow considerably due to the temporary new outbound route having only one lane, said Howard Thompson, 7th Bomb Wing anti-terrorism officer. "One of the ways to avoid a long wait at the main gate is to use the Tye Gate during peak hours such as lunch and between 4 and 5 p.m.," Mr. Thomson said. When exiting the main gate on Arnold Blvd., barricades will force drivers to turn right onto Louisiana. Once on Louisiana drivers will travel approximately 150 yards before turning left onto the temporary out-bound lane. Drivers coming from base housing on Louisiana will have a temporary stop sign located just before the temporary out-bound lane and will need to yield to traffic turning left to exit the base. "There will be signs, traffic cones and barricades to make it clear which direction a driver needs to take to exit via the temporary gate," Mr. Thompson said. "These changes will have no effect on in-bound traffic." The construction on the out-bound lanes is to remove the current surface mount tiger teeth and replace them with flush mount tiger teeth that will be built into the pavement. "Motorists with low- riding vehicles and motorcycles will appreciate the change as the tiger teeth will now be mounted flush and will allow for lower clearance instead of the current tiger teeth that are raised up above the ground," Mr. Thompson said. "The new teeth will also last longer than the current ones, as they are industrial grade and are designed to handle more traffic." The construction cost is estimated to be approximately $30,000.
