News Notes for week of 25 July Published July 15, 2008 DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Load Crew of the Quarter Competition Weapons Standardization will be holding the 7th Bomb Wing Weapons Load Crew of the Quarter competition on July 25 at 8 a.m. in the load crew training facility, Building 9304. Load Crew of the Quarter competition is a one-day event where B-1 weapon load crews battle it out to see who is the "best of the best". This is a great opportunity to see the best load crews compete. Dyess 25th Anniversary Enlisted Dining Out Dyess 25th Anniversary Enlisted Dining Out is Aug. 15 at the Abilene's Civic Center. Social hour starts at 5:30 p.m. and dinner begins at 6 p.m. Attendees have a choice of chicken or vegetarian meal. Dress is semi-formal or mess dress. The cost per ticket is $25. Dyess chapel holds annual swimming pool party The Dyess Chapel is hosting their Annual Swimming Pool Party for the families of deployed, TDY and remote military members July 31, from 7 to 9 p.m. The party is free to all deployed family members. Dyess We Care Team holds annual banquet The 8th Annual Dyess We Care Team banquet is July 26 at 6 p.m. For tickets call Sylvia Shurgot at 696-5999. On-Base School Registration Fair Aug. 11 The On-base School Registration Fair for families new to Dyess is Aug. 11 at the Heritage Club from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fair will cover: Independent School District registration and information; summer activities; before- and after-school programs; and immunizations and physicals. Parents also need to bring immunization record, Social Security card, birth certificate, previous school records, and proof of residency such as an electric bill. Summer registration is normally held at the campuses the week before school information, call the Student Services Office 325-677-1444 ext. 3004. Students in the Abilene district attend neighborhood schools. Children living in base housing are enrolled in Dyess Elementary, Clack Middle School and Cooper High School. Abilene Early Childhood program Abilene Independent School District's Early Childhood program, housed at Woodson and Locust Early Childhood Centers, will also hold a special pre-kindergarten registration during the fair Aug.11 at the Heritage Club from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Child must be four-years-old on or before Sept. 1 to qualify for the early childhood program. Dyess Tax Center is still open The Dyess Tax Center is still open and services are still available for servicemembers returning from deployment. The following are hours the center is open: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The center is in the 7th Bomb Wing Headquarters, Room 211. Services include filing electronic returns for federal and state and stimulus returns. Also, the center provides services for amendments and prior year returns. This service is free to all active duty, guard, and Reserve of all branches of services. In addition, it also available for family members, Department of Defense employees, civilian personnel and retirees. Call 696-2012 for an appointment. The center can file returns electronically until Oct. 15. For deployed returnees bring all documents with you including ID cards of family members, W-2s and 1099s received from financial institutions. For more information, call 696-2012. Sign up for summer youth center movie trips The Dyess Youth Center is offering trips to the movies for children 10 to 18 years old. children will need to cover the cost of snacks and drinks. The cost for movie trips is $7 for youth center members and $9 for non-members. The next event is July 29, "Space Chimps." For more information, call 696-4797. Dyess Vendor Fair being held July 30 The second Dyess Vendor Fair is schedule for July 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Heritage Club. There will be free food and prizes. Admission is free. For more information, call 696-2936. Dyess Lanes will be closed on Sundays Starting July 13, Dyess Lanes will be closed on Sundays until Sept. 7. Summer Summers hours are: Monday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Saturday from 4 - 11 p.m. Dyess Lanes is closed on Sundays. The snack bar closes 30 minutes before closure of the lanes. For more information, call 696-4166. 50 Days of Summer Reading Join the "50 Days of Summer Reading" at the Base Library every Friday from 4 to 5 p.m. until Aug. 8. Each week will have a different theme to make it fun and exiciting for all ages! The theme for July 25 is "50 Fliers, Carwlers, Diggers and Swimmers"! For more information, call 696-2618. Parents Night Out program The Air Force Aid Society and the Airman and Family Readiness Center recognizes that Air Force families are subject to unique stresses due to the nature of military life--deployments, remote tours of duty, extended working hours, etc. In an effort to alleviate some of these stresses, the AFAS in cooperation with the Air Force child care community, has agreed to provide funding for childcare for children six weeks to 12 years under a program called "Give Parents a Break." Give Parents a Break is offered once each month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program is offered at both the Child Development Center (ages six weeks to five years) and at the School Age Program (ages six to 12 years). Please call the Child Development Center or the School Age Program to make reservations not later than 4:30 p.m. the Wednesday prior to each Saturday.
