Dyess tax center to open Published Jan. 28, 2009 7th Bomb Wing Judge Advocate Office DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Dyess Tax Center will be open for active duty members Feb. 9, and remain open through April 15. Beginning Feb. 16, the Dyess Tax Center will provide services for all other eligible recipients. The Tax Center will provide free income tax return services to all active-duty members, family members, retirees and civilian employees. Although the services are primarily geared toward individuals making $100,000 or less in gross income, limited services will be provided, on a space-available basis, to those earning a higher income. Also, limited services will be provided after April 15, for members returning from deployment only. The Tax Center will accept walk-in clients from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Appointments will be available for active duty members on Thursdays from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. The center will be closed on weekends and federal holidays. Although the concept of federal income taxes can be intimidating to most, volunteers from the Dyess community have answered the call to assist others with their tax concerns. Volunteers have undergone extensive Internal Revenue Services' training and are now certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance representatives. The VITA representatives will prepare income tax returns for all active duty members, dependents, retirees, and civilians with proper identification. The VITA representatives need some documents in order to prepare individual's taxes. Some of the most common are: a copy of Social Security cards for the taxpayer, spouse and all dependents; bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit; economic stimulus payment amount documentation; childcare/daycare expenses information along with the name, address, and social security numbers of the childcare provider; form W-2 from each employer (active duty members may obtain this from https://mypay.dfas.mil), 1099R for retirees, interest and dividend statements, plus any other proof of income. For those itemizing, provide a mortgage interest statement, real estate taxes paid, charitable giving statements, and other expenses as applicable. If you are not sure what you can deduct, bring a copy of the documentation and the volunteers will help you determine if the IRS allows that deduction. If you are filing a tax return under a power of attorney, be sure to bring an additional copy. You should be prepared to give consent to the limited use of your information for Air Force and IRS statistical purposes; this consent will not include any personal identifiable information. If you are not willing to give consent then the VITA representatives will be unable to electronically file your return for you. The Tax Center is located at 397 3rd Street, Bldg 7316.
