The Dyess Tax Center officially opened its doors for the fifth tax season Feb. 9 for active duty members only. Beginning Feb. 16, the Dyess Tax Center will provide services for all other eligible recipients.

"The service we offer here at our tax center makes it easier for all of us to satisfy our obligations as citizens," said Col. Robert Gass, 7th Bomb Wing commander. "Additionally, those who have deployed in defense of America will find it easier to accept the tax advantages offered by a grateful nation."

Last year more than 1,400 Team Dyess members took advantage of the free income tax return services, saving more than $560,000 in preparation and filing fees.

All active-duty members, family members, retirees and civilian employees are eligible to file their returns at the center. Limited services will be provided, on a space-available basis, to those earning a higher income of $100,000.

The Tax Center accepts walk-in clients from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Appointments will be available for active duty members on Thursdays from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. The center will be closed on weekends and federal holidays.

"The best aspect of the tax center is that it is staffed by volunteers looking out for our Airmen and their families," said Colonel Gass. "Their investment in time and patience allows them to share their learning and skill with our military community in a way that helps everyone."

Volunteers undergo extensive Internal Revenue Services' training and are certified as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance representatives.

The VITA representatives need some of the following common documents:
-- A copy of Social Security cards for the taxpayer, spouse and all dependents

-- Bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit

-- Economic stimulus payment amount documentation

-- Childcare expenses information along with the name, address, and social security numbers of the childcare provider

-- Form W-2 from each employer (active duty members may obtain this from https://mypay.dfas.mil), 1099R for retirees, interest and dividend statements, plus any other proof of income.

For those itemizing, provide a mortgage interest statement, real estate taxes paid, charitable giving statements, and other expenses as applicable.
If you are filing a tax return under a power of attorney, be sure to bring an additional copy.

The Tax Center is located at 397 3rd Street, Bldg 7316. For more information, contact Senior Airman Natacia Flick, natacia.flick@dyess.af.mil, or Capt. Marc Mallone, marc.mallone@dyess.af.mil, at DSN 461-1758 or 325-696-1758.
