Forclosure help for Airmen
Foreclosure is a frightening prospect for anyone, but help is on the way for some airmen struggling to pay their mortgages. According to a report by RealtyTrac, foreclosures in Texas rose 7.92 percent from January to February. Fortunately, there is a new option available for airmen to avoid foreclosure. The DoD Homeowners Assistance Program (HAP) was recently expanded to include eligible military members who have PCS'd since 2006. In order to be eligible, the following criteria must be met: (1) Permanent reassignment requires move of more than 50 miles. (2) Reassignment ordered between 1 February 2006 and 30 September 2012 (or earlier date designated by Secretary of Defense). (3) Property purchased (or contract to purchase signed) before 1 July 2006. (4) Property sold by owner between 1 July 2006 and 30 September 2012, or earlier date designated by Sec. Def. (5) Property was the primary residence of the owner. (6) Owner has not previously received these benefit payments. HAP provides assistance in four ways. For eligible applicants, the Government may: reimburse you for part of your loss from selling your home; assist you, if you don't have funds from the sale of your home to pay-off your mortgage; purchase your home by paying off the mortgage; help, if you default on your mortgage. Do not wait until foreclosure proceedings have been initiated against your home. Find out now if you are eligible for this program. Foreclosure not only takes away your home, it can seriously damage your credit. If you have questions, contact the Legal Office at 696-2232.
