The 7th Security Forces Squadron has started a bike patrol, which will be out on the streets seven days a week to help in the base housing area until Labor Day.

The newly created bike patrol started duty May 30 to be a positive influence in the base housing area.

"These guys were hand selected by us to represent a positive image of law enforcement in our community," Captain Rodney Heard, 7th Security Forces Squadron.

During their three months on the patrol their job will be to interact with the community and increase awareness of law enforcement presence.

"Their job will not be to write traffic tickets," Capt. Heard said. "The goal is to have the patrol interact with our base community. We want to get rid of the perception we only are looking for the bad stuff, but rather we are looking out for our people in our community."

As part of looking out for the community, Captain Heard hopes the patrols in the neighborhoods will also be deterrence for any crime or vandalism.

"There will always be two patrols out on both sides of housing from noon to 8 p.m," Capt. Heard said. "If you want a patrol to swing by your street at any time just call the law enforcement desk."

The patrols also will be staged out of the housing area from 198 Virginia Street.
