Becoming the Air Combat Command Male Athlete of the Year is no easy feat. It takes a lot of determination and dedication to achieve this status.

This year's Air Combat Command Male Athlete of the Year is Tech. Sgt. Jonathan Kiley, 7th Equipment Maintenance Squadron.

"I was shocked that I made it past the base level," Sergeant Kiley said. "I was deployed for about five months of the year and missed a lot of races I would have normally competed in."

He has been involved in more than 21 off-road triathlons, two regular triathlons, approximately 30 five-and ten-kilometer runs, one Air Force marathon and 25 mountain bike races.

Sergeant Kiley has been competing in off-road triathlons for the past five years and has been to nationals three times. In his first off-road triathlon, he received third place.

In 2009 he was ranked 14th out of more than 1,400 people in off-roag triathlons.

"It's a lifestyle change," Sergeant Kiley said. "Everything from eating, sleeping, training and mental preparation needs to happen all at once. It all comes together on race day. And when I'm done, it's the greatest feeling in the world."

Training two to three times a day helps him stay focused, he added.

"I love training and pushing myself," Sergeant Kiley said. "If I miss a day I'm mad. It helps me deal with stress from work and everyday life."

He has been competing in mountain biking since he was 12 and enjoys it more as an adult. "It makes me feel young again," he added.

Sergeant Kiley recently had a new addition to his family, a son. It's a challenge finding time to get quality training with a child and helping my wife, he said.

He's currently training and preparing to compete for the Air Force Male Athlete of the year.
