A Dyess Air Force Base dependant was presented the Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year award here March 2.

After 16 year old Daniel Goldie was presented the award, Col. Robert Gass, 7th Bomb Wing Commander, awarded him yet again with a commander's coin.

"I'm pretty excited and nervous at the same time," said Daniel.

While he accepted the award, his mother Marlene Goldie and father Chief Master Sgt. David Goldie, 7th Bomb Wing Command Chief, smiled and applauded.

"We are extremely proud of him," said Chief Goldie. "This is a big deal; he is a positive role model for his peers."

To qualify for the award participants must write five essays on different topics and demonstrate community leadership, have good grades and show pride in the youth center.

"Daniel helps out a lot," said Diane Areskog, Youth Center Director. "He volunteers for meals on wheels, mentor children and teaches arts and crafts, it's always nice to have him around.

While other children are packing-up to go home with their families, Daniel stays at the Youth Center for an extra 30 minutes helping the employees clean up.

When it comes to helping others I guess you can say I get motivated, said Daniel.

Daniel has been involved in the Air Forces youth programs and Boys and Girls Club for approximately eight years now.

He's currently a junior at Cooper High School and is planning to attend Abilene Christian University or Harden-Simmons University upon graduation in 2011.
