Dyess flight surgeon receives ACC Flight Surgeon of the Year Published March 30, 2010 By Senior Airman Stephen Reyes 7th Bomb Wing Public Affairs DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Capt. Jon Standley, 7th Aerospace Medicine Squadron flight surgeon, was recently chosen as the 2009 Air Combat Command Company Grade Officer Flight Surgeon of the Year. "I'm pretty excited, it's definitely a nice award to get," Captain Standley said. The Texas native commissioned into the Air Force in 2001; he then went on inactive Reserve status for four years to attend medical school at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth, Texas. "From my military experience so far, I feel more comfortable and confident playing in the leadership roles now than before," he said. "It has been an overall positive career." Captain Standley deployed to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, filling a residency trained flight surgeon slot as team lead. As lead manager he enabled Bagram flight surgeons to escort patients on twice as many flights, while maintaining 100 percent hospital coverage. He also delivered and managed his own air evacuation patients, escorting 30 high-acuity patients to Ramstein Air Base, Germany. Overall, he flew 41 combat air evacuation missions during his six month deployment. Captain Standley was also tasked to provide physicals to 54 Afghan national army and air force student pilots. "As my deputy flight chief, Eric is my trusted and 'go-to' flight surgeon in execution of the operational medicine mission at Dyess AFB," said Lt. Col. Walter Matthews, 7th Aerospace Medicine Squadron commander. "Never off-duty, he's the first call, day or night, for the flyers and dependants of the 28th Bomb Squadron." "My philosophy is to allow people to succeed; not trying to control everything in the work place, but to provide a freedom where they can succeed on their own," Captain Standley said. The Air Force will announce the Flight Surgeon of the Air Force in early May. Captain Stanley plans to eventually attend residency school for internal medicine.
