Dyess Airmen collected more than 3,000 pounds of dog and cat food during a weekend drive June 5-6 in support of Rescue the Animals, SPCA shelter.

"We put in roughly 15 hours of volunteer work in order to collect as much dog and cat food as possible," said Airman 1st Class Lance Wallerstedt, air traffic controller.

Once the weekend rolled to an end, the total amount of food collected was enough to feed the animals of the shelter for about 10 weeks.

"Our shelter is always at about a 150 percent occupancy rate. Sometimes we have to turn some animals away because we don't have enough room and we don't euthanize any of our animals," said Paul Washburn, owner of the shelter.

The Rescue the Animals, SPCA shelter is the largest adoption shelter between Fort Worth and El Paso. The shelter also helps local law enforcement to investigate animal abuse and neglect in 22 counties. They also offer adoption, low cost spay and neuter, low cost vaccinations, and heart worm testing.
