With Halloween just around the corner, Dyess will celebrate with several festive events.

The fitness center will host a Halloween costume 5-K run Oct. 28 at 7:30 a.m.

A costume contest will be held Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. and a pumpkin carving contest at 3 p.m., both at the Base Exchange main court.

Trick or treating takes place Oct. 31 from 5-8 p.m. in base housing.

7th Security Forces Squadron will have five two-man teams walking in the housing area. Bike patrols and the on-duty flight will patrol the area too. Their safety house will also be open during trick or treating.

With a little attention to safety, you can keep it fun and not frightful. Here are a few tips to follow.

· Help your child choose or make a safe costume. Make sure the costume is flame retardant/resistant.

· Dress your children in bright costumes so others can see them. If their costumes are dark, have them wear a reflective belt or carry a glow stick or flashlight.

· Costumes should be short enough so they don't cause your child to trip and fall.

· Make sure if your child is carrying a prop, such as an axe, butcher knife or pitchfork, the tips are smooth and flexible enough not to cause any injury if fallen on.

· Adults should always accompany little ones. If your children are older and you decide not to accompany them, make sure they know the rules on not going with strangers. Know what route they will travel and set a time for them to be home.

· Homeowners should prepare their home for trick or treaters by removing obstacles from the front yard, restraining dogs and other animals and lighting the house well.

· If you set jack-o-lanterns on your porch with candles in them, make sure they are far enough out of the way so children's costumes can't catch fire. Artificial lights and candles are a safer alternative to real candles.
