A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official reopening to the base movie theater here Feb. 11 after a two-year closure and multi-million dollar upgrade.

A guest appearance by Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins cheerleaders helped kick-off the grand opening event by signing autographs, taking pictures and meeting with Airmen.

Movies then returned to Dyess with a complimentary pre-released showing of "Unknown," as well as "Gnomeo and Juliet" and "Green Hornet" the following day.

The Dyess Theater was constructed in 1959 and had not been renovated since 1972. This put the project atop the Dyess wish list for the past seven years before being approved for funding in 2009.

Work began on the theater in November 2009 and the total cost for the renovation was approximately $4.5 million.

"After taking a look at this newly remodeled base theater you will come to realize how much work was put into this project and how this theater is light years ahead of the downtown competition through not only technology but amenities," said Col. James E. Murray, 7th Mission Support Group commander.

The theater's new features include the construction of a 2,800 sq. foot lobby, as well as the renovation of the existing auditorium floor, seating, roof, restrooms and front lobby concession area.

Additionally, Army and Air Force Exchange Service contributed more than $100,000, which included the screen, concessions and movie sound system.

"It is an extraordinary venue for Airmen to enjoy a good movie at a great price," said Maj. Katrina C. Stephens, 7th Force Support Squadron commander.

Ticket costs for future shows are $4.50 for adults, $3.50 for children and children under the age of five are free.

"The average ticket price for movies in Abilene is generally $8.00, so a trip to the base theater saves us some money," said Airman Christopher R. Kasselman, 7th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron B-1 aircraft technician.
