You were just handed a TDY to San Antonio for a week. You could fly, but would like to have access to a vehicle while you're there. Due to funding, you're not authorized a rental car and could possibly take a privately owned vehicle. However, it is in poor shape and may not make it there. How will you get there?

You may be authorized to use a U-Drive-It government motor vehicle from Vehicle Operations Control Center. Before contacting your unit vehicle control officer about requesting a UDI vehicle, ask yourself these simple questions:

Is the purpose of the trip official?

Does your request further the Air Force mission?

Can the use of the vehicle be justified to a taxpayer and not create public criticism?

If you answered Yes to these questions, you could be authorized the use of a GOV. Vehicle operations are assigned a 30 vehicle UDI fleet to support base units requiring vehicle support above and beyond their respective unit. If we do not have a vehicle to support an official request, we will provide a letter of non-availability which allows units to rent a vehicle if funds are available.

Also, if you notice a situation in which you do not feel a vehicle is being used in accordance with the questions above, call us at (325) 696-2265 with the time, place, vehicle type and license plate number. We will investigate to ensure vehicles are being utilized for official purposes. This also applies to vehicles rented with government funds.

In addition to supplying vehicle use to the entire base, vehicle operations moves the beans, bullets and personnel across Dyess and Texas.

Vehicle operations play a critical role in garrison support and deployments. More than 40 percent of the section is deployed at any given time around the world. For the past seven years, vehicle operators have been tasked to support the Army doing convoy operations throughout Afghanistan and Iraq.

We are here to assist you. If you have questions concerning vehicle support or official use of government vehicles, contact your squadron VCO or the Vehicle Operations Control Center at (325) 696-2265.
