The 317th Airlift Group held a Memorial Day ceremony May 24 to honor the memory of servicemembers who sacrificed their lives in the service of our country.

"On Veterans Day we honor those who paid the price to be free with commitment," said Col. Walter Ward, 317th Airlift Group commander. "But on Memorial Day, we honor those who paid the price to be free with sacrifice."

During the ceremony, airmen stood in silence for 22 seconds, one second for each year U.S. forces have been deployed since Desert Storm.

"We are free today because heroes chose to fight on to victory, even at the price of giving the last full measure of devotion," Ward said. Let us resolve today to make their legacy our obligation that we will continue to rise up when our freedom is threatened. Just as all of you have since September 11, 2001, that we will, as President Kennedy, said 'bear any burden, pay any price' to ensure that America, a name synonymous with freedom, does not perish from the Earth."
