Dyess trims outdoor recreation services due to budget cuts Published April 18, 2013 7th Bomb wing Public Affairs DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- As the Department of Defense seeks to overcome budget challenges, Dyess Air Force Base must also look for ways to overcome budgetary restraints, despite the setbacks. One area that will be impacted by the budget deficit is the recreational programs offered by the Force Support Squadron. "We have reviewed numerous options, but unfortunately some services will not be available during the upcoming summer season," said Lt. Col. Naomi Welcome, 7th Force Support Squadron commander. "The outdoor pools at Dyess will not be opening this summer due to limited Department of Defense funding and an end to appropriated fund support." Keeping the pools functional requires pre-season inspections, supplies, maintenance, repairs, lifeguards and post season inspections. Though user fees can help offset the loss of funds, they are not sufficient to offset the loss needed to operate the outdoor pools. The outdoor pools, while one of the most noticeable, are not the only service impacted by limited funding. Increased personnel cuts, fewer exercise classes and reduced overall services are a few other areas that are affected. "Although these cuts are challenging, they also provide us the opportunity to work together to come up with other solutions. There are a number of other programs that will be available for use this summer," said Col. Kristina O'Brien, 7th Mission Support Group commander. This year the Air Force dedicated $810 million to core family services, such as childcare, youth programs, morale, welfare and recreation and family services. The Dyess Force Support Squadron provides these services to military personnel and their families by offering other activities to enjoy during the summer, including Arts & Crafts classes, bowling, golf, youth events, outdoor recreation and fitness programs, and leisure activities through Information, Tickets and Travel (ITT).
