Col. Michael Bob Starr assumed command of the 7th Bomb Wing from Brig. Gen. Glen D. VanHerck during a ceremony held here Feb. 14.

As commander, Starr is responsible for the health and welfare of more than 12,000 active duty members, civilian employees and family members. In addition, he provides combat-ready B-1 aircraft, crews and associated combat support for global engagement taskings.

Lt. Gen. Tod Wolters, 12th Air Force commander, presided over the ceremony.

Starr, who is now starting his fourth time being assigned here at Dyess, said during the ceremony how excited he was to return to a place he calls home.

"I don't have to read a display to know about the 7th Bomb Wing," Starr said. "I know you. I've learned with you, I've flown with you, I've taught with you, I've exercised with you, I've deployed with you and I've defended freedom with you.

"I know your legacy success rests not only in accomplishing the extraordinary things, but also accomplishing ordinary things with extraordinary consistency."

Starr said he plans to continue Dyess' legacy of success by following five simple steps.

"You can expect me to focus on five very ordinary things - basic principles that have served me well and served as the basis for my leadership philosophy; demonstrating character, pursuing excellence, promoting teamwork, cultivating leadership and embracing innovation."

Starr ended his speech by letting the base know how he feels about becoming the newest 7th bomb wing commander.

"One of the final things I know about the 7th Bomb Wing - you're not only one of the oldest wings in the Air Force, but also one of its very best," Starr said. "I am grateful for your service and I am very, very proud to be your commander."
