Refuse and recyling program gets new contract

  • Published
Effective June 1, new refuse and recycling collection procedures will go into effect at Dyess. The new procedures will provide significantly different services from the past. Quail Hollow is not included in this contract and will continue to be serviced by the city of Abilene.

However, the collection schedules for the main base and the family housing areas will change. A new collection schedule will be advertised as soon as possible and will be effective June 1. Air Combat Command has established a standard of 80 percent full for containers before being serviced by the contractor. The contractor and base personnel will monitor the amount of refuse and recyclable material generated at each location.

The result of the monitoring program may cause the location of containers and the collection schedule to change again after July 1.

Most of the common use trash cans located throughout the base will be the responsibility of the contractor, and will also have to meet the 80 percent standard. The common use trash containers are located around the ball field and recreation area, along the air park, in front of the BX and commissary, and similar areas. They do not include the squadron or dormitory gazebos or picnic areas. Common use trash receptacles located on the playgrounds in the family housing area will also be the responsibility of the contractor.

Due to ACC requirements, the Dyess Recycle Facility will only be accepting paper products, such as cardboard, white office paper, newsprint and magazines for now. This includes the main base and the family housing areas. Aluminum cans, plastic bottles, milk bottles, and other recyclable materials that are currently being collected will not be recycled through the base contractor, and should not be placed in the recycle containers. These items may be taken to one of the Abilene recycling centers.

Bulk item such as yard and wood waste, furniture, cartons and bundles will now be collected from the family housing area. Residents will be advised of collection days and may place these materials on the curb along with their normal refuse container for contractor collection. The contractor is no longer required to maintain collection bins outside of the material recycling facility.

Abilene maintains a number of recycling centers at various locations. The primary recycling center, located at 2209 Oak Street, is open Monday - Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4:45 p.m. They will accept aluminum, plastic, glass, metals, and other types of material. Computer monitors and televisions are accepted with a $5 fee. Additional information is available by calling the center at (325) 672-2209.
