At the end of a corridor within the Hangar Center, Airmen and families can see and visit the temporary location for the Dyess library.

The library reopened in April of this year and is wanting to let base personnel know that they are open. At the end of 2018, the library will work with the education center and move to the area under construction at the Hangar Center.

“My main goal is to get the word out there that we’re back and ready to serve,” said Jennifer Rodman, 7th Force Support Squadron librarian. “There are a lot of neat resources people don’t know about, like the digital resources that are available through the Air Force Portal.”

The library is moving towards becoming more of a digital library. There are eResources that can be found through the Air Force portal which includes: eBooks, audiobooks, digital magazines, research databases, language and culture resources, educational resources and more.

Along with digital resources, the library is expecting a shipment of more College Level Examination Program and Air Force Chief of Staff reading list books. These resources give Airmen and families more opportunities to enhance their education.

“The library helps me achieve my goals by providing me with CLEP books and study guides, as well as providing me with books to help better myself as an Airman,” said Airman 1st Class Caesar Flores, 7th Medical Operations Squadron medical technician.

With the close relationship between Abilene and Dyess, Airmen and families have the option to put books and other items on hold and have them sent to the library on base. Military members and their families who do not reside inside the city limits do not have to pay the non-resident library card fee.

September is library card month and to boost library card memberships and awareness of the library, the librarian is giving a bag full of prizes to include a free book to anyone who signs up.

There are programs still in the works for Airmen and families. If any person is wanting to start a program or a class, the library is looking for motivated and willing volunteers. Preschool Story Time will start Sept. 15 and every Friday following, at 10:45 a.m.

“As a military dependent and the mother of two veterans, I am very aware of the positive impact access to library materials are to military families,” said Lori Grumet, Abilene Public Library city librarian. “At APL we are proud to serve all the men and women who protect our freedoms, and we hope to be able to continue this partnership for an extended time to come.”
