The 2017-18 school year begins Aug. 21 for the Wylie Independent School District, and Aug. 28 for the Abilene Independent School District. As classes begins, Diane Russell, Dyess Air Force Base school liaison, encourages parents and students to be prepared.

Having an up-to-date shot record and the right supplies for a student’s class are the two important things that parents should focus on first, Russell said.

Parents should also keep an eye on the amount of sleep their children are getting just before school starts.

“Often, parents will have a party a day or two before their kids start school” Russell said. “Not only have they been staying up later most of the summer, but forgetting to correct their sleep schedule will make them zombies for the first couple days.”

Safety is also important to keep in mind as the school year starts up again, equally so for students, parents and others who live near or pass by a school zone.

“The roads will have kids walking to school, so drivers need to be aware of their surroundings,” Russell said. “Kids should also try to walk in groups, and avoid walking to school alone.”

According to the American Red Cross, students walking to and from school should:

• Always cross at intersections and designated crosswalks.
• Look for traffic when stepping off a bus or from behind parked cars.
• Always obey crossing guards.
• Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.
• Never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

Motorists are also advised to follow best safety practices as the school year begins.

Drivers should be aware of their surroundings, especially in school zones and residential areas, according to the American Red Cross. Drivers also may be fined for use of their cell phones to make calls or text while within a school zone, and should avoid distractions (such as eating or drinking) while driving.

By following good safety habits, members of Team Dyess can ensure students start the school year safely.
