Col. Matthew Newell is the Vice Commander of the 7th Bomb Wing, Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. He assists the commander in providing for the health and welfare of more than 12,000 active-duty, DoD civilians and family members. In addition, he provides combat-ready B-1B Lancer aircraft, crews and associated combat support for global engagement taskings. Prior to this assignment, Colonel Newell served as a Senior Fellow at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, Garmisch, Germany.
Colonel Newell received his commission through the Weber State University Air Force ROTC program as a distinguished graduate in 2001. He is a command pilot with more than 2,600 flying hours.
He has served as a RC-135 Evaluator Pilot, T-38 Pilot and B-2 Wing Weapons Officer, as well as the military aide to the President of the United States. Prior to his year as a Fellow, he commanded the 13th Bomb Squadron, Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri where he was responsible for the conventional and nuclear combat readiness of the men and women in one of only two operational B-2 stealth bomber squadrons in the Air Force.
