The 317th Airlift Wing has a distinguished history through its several forms and through several wars. Initially activated February 22, 1942, the then 317th Troop Carrier Group (TCG) was formed at Duncan Field, San Antonio, Texas, during World War II. On April 1, 1997, the 317th, now designated the 317th Airlift Group, returned to its state of origin when it was reactivated at Dyess Air Force Base, in Abilene, Texas. The 317th once more experienced a shift when it was activated as the 317th Airlift Wing on July 6, 2017.
