Dyess Air Force Base is accepting applications from members of the Abilene community for the Honorary Commander’s Program for 2022.

The Honorary Commander’s Program is an executive-level program intended to educate community members who have limited knowledge of the Air Force and Dyess AFB to foster public support for the base and its Airmen and families.

Dyess has a rich history and connection to the city of Abilene and is committed to serving together to maintain and enhance open and positive relations with the local community.

The program also serves as a forum in which Dyess commanders can solicit advice and support from their civic leader counterparts on matters affecting military and civilian communities. Honorary commanders will be assigned to unit commanders serving in the 7th Bomb Wing, 317th Airlift Wing, 489th Bomb Group, 436th Training Squadron, 337th Test Evaluation Squadron, 77th Weapons Squadron and Det. 1 U.S. Marine Corps.

Honorary commanders will be invited to on-base functions, unit functions and special events such as awards ceremonies, changes of command and holiday events. Dyess unit commanders are encouraged to immerse their assigned honorary commanders into their respective missions. Honorary commanders are likewise encouraged to share their civilian professions and business with the Airmen in their assigned units.

Civic leaders and community leaders selected as honorary commanders will serve a two-year term. At the end of their term, the program’s goal is to have forged a mutually beneficial relationship between influential community members and Dyess AFB Airmen and their families that last beyond their term as honorary commanders.

Anyone interested may nominate themselves or someone they believe would be a great asset to the program. Click here to fill out an application. The public affairs office is accepting applications from June 15 until Aug. 31, 2022.
